The RTX 4080 is Ada Lovelace on TSMC 4N — 9,728 CUDA cores, 16 GB GDDR6X on a 256-bit bus, 320W TGP, PCIe 4.0. It supports DLSS 3 with single-frame generation, and its RT hardware is third-gen.

The 4080 has more than double the CUDA cores and a much higher launch price. The 9070 XT is a newer architecture with better efficiency and FSR 4.
Rasterization
In raster, the RTX 4080 is roughly 15–25% faster than the RX 9070 XT at 1440p and 4K. Its wider core count and higher memory bandwidth give it a real lead.
The 9070 XT compensates with architectural improvements and higher clocks, but it doesn’t close the gap. For pure raster, the 4080 wins.
Ray tracing
Ray tracing is closer. Both cards have third-gen RT hardware, and the 4080’s mature driver stack gives it a small edge — 10–20% in RT-heavy titles. But the 9070 XT’s RDNA 4 RT is a big improvement over previous AMD generations, and the gap is much smaller than in past comparisons.
For ray tracing, the 4080 is slightly ahead.
VRAM and memory
Both cards have 16 GB on a 256-bit bus. VRAM is identical, but the 4080’s GDDR6X is slightly faster — ~716 GB/s versus ~640 GB/s on the 9070 XT. The difference is small and rarely matters in practice.
Both are adequate for 1440p and capable at 4K in most titles.
Power and thermals
The 9070 XT draws ~304W; the 4080 draws 320W. The difference is small, and both are power-hungry cards.
Efficiency is comparable. Neither is a low-power card, but the 9070 XT is slightly more efficient per frame in most workloads.
Features
The 9070 XT supports FSR 4, DisplayPort 2.1a, AV1 encoding, and modern APIs. FSR 4 is a major improvement over FSR 3 and closes much of the gap with DLSS.
The 4080 supports DLSS 3, which remains excellent — NVIDIA’s upscaling is still the gold standard. Its NVENC encoder is useful for streaming, and its driver stack is mature. But it lacks DisplayPort 2.1.
For upscaling quality, DLSS 3 is still slightly ahead in some titles, but FSR 4 has narrowed the gap considerably.
Price and value
New at $599, the 9070 XT is one of the best value cards of the generation. It’s fast, efficient, and modern.
Used at $800–950, the 4080 is more expensive and only offers 15–25% more raster performance. For pure value, the 9070 XT wins by a wide margin.
The verdict
The RTX 4080 is the faster card in raw raster — 15–25% ahead. For pure gaming performance, it’s the better card.
The RX 9070 XT is the better value. It’s close in performance, has FSR 4, draws less power, and costs significantly less. For most gamers, it’s the smarter buy.
The decision comes down to budget. If you want maximum performance and can afford $800–950 used, the 4080. If you want excellent value and don’t need the last 20%, the 9070 XT.
