GPU Battle #47 โ€” RTX 5070 vs RTX 4070 Ti

The RTX 5070 is NVIDIA’s 2025 Blackwell upper-mid-range card โ€” 12 GB GDDR7, DLSS 4, and a $549 MSRP. The RTX 4070 Ti is NVIDIA’s 2023 Ada upper-mid-range card โ€” 12 GB GDDR6X, DLSS 3, and once the go-to high-refresh 1440p card at $799. Both target 1440p high-refresh gaming, both have 12 GB of VRAM, and both are in the same price bracket on the used market. The comparison is about generational improvement โ€” Blackwell versus Ada โ€” and whether the newer card justifies the upgrade.

Short version: The RTX 4070 Ti is faster in raster and RT โ€” it’s a higher-tier card. The RTX 5070 has DLSS 4, lower power draw, and a lower MSRP. Used 4070 Ti prices determine the winner.

Specs

The RTX 5070 is Blackwell on TSMC 4N โ€” 6,144 CUDA cores, 12 GB GDDR7 on a 192-bit bus, 250W TGP, PCIe 5.0. It supports DLSS 4 with multi-frame generation, and its RT hardware is fourth-gen.

The RTX 4070 Ti is Ada Lovelace on TSMC 4N โ€” 7,680 CUDA cores, 12 GB GDDR6X on a 192-bit bus, 285W TGP, PCIe 4.0. It supports DLSS 3 with single-frame generation, and its RT hardware is third-gen.

The 4070 Ti has 25% more CUDA cores and a higher power budget. The 5070 has newer architecture, GDDR7 memory, and DLSS 4. On paper, the 4070 Ti is the more powerful card.

Rasterization

In raster, the RTX 4070 Ti is roughly 10โ€“20% faster than the RTX 5070 at 1440p and 4K. Its wider core count and higher power budget give it a clear lead. The 5070 is a strong 1440p card but doesn’t quite match the 4070 Ti.

For pure raster, the 4070 Ti wins.

Ray tracing

Ray tracing is closer. The 5070’s fourth-gen RT cores are more efficient than Ada’s third-gen, and the 5070 lands within 5โ€“15% of the 4070 Ti in RT-heavy titles. In some games with DLSS 4’s multi-frame generation, the 5070 can feel smoother despite lower raw performance.

For raw RT, the 4070 Ti is slightly ahead. For perceived smoothness with DLSS 4, the 5070 can match or exceed it.

VRAM and memory

Both cards have 12 GB on a 192-bit bus. VRAM is identical, but the 5070’s GDDR7 is faster โ€” ~672 GB/s versus ~504 GB/s on the 4070 Ti. That bandwidth advantage helps in memory-heavy workloads.

At 1440p, 12 GB is adequate in most titles. At 4K with high textures, both cards can run into VRAM limits in the newest games.

Power and thermals

The 5070 draws 250W; the 4070 Ti draws 285W. The 5070 is more efficient, runs cooler, and needs a less powerful PSU. For SFF builds or quieter systems, the 5070 is easier to live with.

Features

The 5070 supports DLSS 4 with multi-frame generation, DisplayPort 2.1b, and newer NVENC encoders. DLSS 4 can generate up to three additional frames per rendered frame, dramatically improving perceived smoothness.

The 4070 Ti supports DLSS 3 with single-frame generation โ€” still excellent, but a generation behind. It lacks DisplayPort 2.1 and newer media features.

For features, the 5070 is ahead.

Price and value

New at $549 (if you can find it at MSRP), the 5070 is the more affordable card. But availability has been tight, and street prices often exceed MSRP.

Used at $500โ€“600, the 4070 Ti is similarly priced and offers 10โ€“20% more raster performance. For pure raster gaming, it’s a strong buy.

For value, the two are close. The 5070 wins on features and efficiency; the 4070 Ti wins on raw performance.

The verdict

The RTX 4070 Ti is the faster card in raw performance โ€” 10โ€“20% ahead in raster, slightly ahead in RT. For pure gaming performance, it’s the better card.

The RTX 5070 is the better new card โ€” DLSS 4, lower power draw, and a lower MSRP. For most gamers, its performance is more than enough, and the newer features are valuable.

The decision comes down to availability and price. At MSRP, the 5070 is the better buy. If the 4070 Ti is available used near MSRP, its extra performance makes it compelling.

Short version:
Choose the RTX 5070 if you’re buying new, want DLSS 4, lower power draw, and a warranty at MSRP.
Choose the RTX 4070 Ti if you want slightly better raw performance and can find it used at a fair price.
