GPU Battle #37 โ RTX 5060 vs RTX 4070
The RTX 5060 is NVIDIA’s 2025 Blackwell mainstream card โ 8 GB GDDR7, DLSS 4, and a price aimed at the $299โ329 bracket. The RTX 4070 is NVIDIA’s 2023 Ada upper-mid-range card โ 12 GB GDDR6X, DLSS 3, and once the go-to 1440p card at $599. One is a current budget option with modern features; the other is a discontinued card that’s now available used. The tier gap matters โ the 4070 is a higher-class GPU โ but the 5060 has newer architecture and features. The comparison comes down to price, VRAM, and what you actually need.
Short version: The RTX 4070 is faster in raster and has more VRAM โ it’s the better raw performance card. The RTX 5060 has DLSS 4 and a lower price at MSRP. Used 4070 prices determine the winner.
Specs
The RTX 5060 is Blackwell on TSMC 4N โ 3,840 CUDA cores, 8 GB GDDR7 on a 128-bit bus, 145W TGP, PCIe 5.0. It supports DLSS 4 with multi-frame generation, and its RT hardware is fourth-gen.
The RTX 4070 is Ada Lovelace on TSMC 4N โ 5,888 CUDA cores, 12 GB GDDR6X on a 192-bit bus, 200W TGP, PCIe 4.0. It supports DLSS 3 with single-frame generation, and its RT hardware is third-gen.
| Spec | RTX 5060 | RTX 4070 |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Blackwell | Ada Lovelace |
| CUDA cores | 3,840 | 5,888 |
| VRAM | 8 GB GDDR7 | 12 GB GDDR6X |
| Bus | 128-bit | 192-bit |
| TGP | 145W | 200W |
| PCIe | 5.0 | 4.0 |
| Upscaling | DLSS 4 (multi-frame) | DLSS 3 (single-frame) |
| RT hardware | 4th gen | 3rd gen |
| Launch price | $299 | $599 |
The 4070 has 53% more CUDA cores, 50% more VRAM, and a wider memory bus. The 5060 has newer architecture, GDDR7, DLSS 4, and much lower power draw. On paper, the 4070 is the more powerful card.
Rasterization
In raster, the RTX 4070 is roughly 25โ35% faster than the RTX 5060 at 1080p and 1440p. Its wider core count and higher memory bandwidth give it a clear lead. The 5060 is a solid 1080p card but struggles at 1440p in demanding titles.
The 5060 compensates with architectural improvements and faster GDDR7 memory, but it doesn’t close the gap. For pure raster, the 4070 wins.
Ray tracing
Ray tracing is closer. The 5060’s fourth-gen RT cores are more efficient than Ada’s third-gen, and the 5060 lands within 10โ20% of the 4070 in RT-heavy titles. In some games with DLSS 4’s multi-frame generation, the 5060 can feel smoother despite lower raw performance.
The 4070 remains a strong RT card, but Blackwell has narrowed the gap.
For raw RT, the 4070 is slightly ahead. For perceived smoothness with DLSS 4, the 5060 can match or exceed it.
VRAM and memory
This is a real difference. The 4070 has 12 GB; the 5060 has 8 GB. At 1440p with high textures, the 4070’s extra VRAM provides headroom the 5060 lacks. In a few demanding titles, the 5060 can run into VRAM limits even at 1080p.
For 1080p gaming, 8 GB is adequate in most titles but limiting in the newest ones. For 1440p, 12 GB is the safer choice.
The 4070’s memory is also faster in bandwidth โ ~504 GB/s versus ~448 GB/s on the 5060. Not a huge difference, but the 4070’s wider bus gives it an edge.
Power and thermals
The 5060 draws 145W; the 4070 draws 200W. The 5060 is significantly more efficient, runs cooler, and needs a less powerful PSU. For SFF builds or quieter systems, the 5060 is easier to live with.
Both are reasonable cards for their class, but the 5060 is the more efficient option.
Features
The 5060 supports DLSS 4 with multi-frame generation, DisplayPort 2.1b, and newer NVENC encoders. DLSS 4 can generate up to three additional frames per rendered frame, dramatically improving perceived smoothness in supported games.
The 4070 supports DLSS 3 with single-frame generation โ still excellent, but a generation behind. It lacks DisplayPort 2.1 and newer media features.
For features, the 5060 is ahead.
Price and value
New at $299โ329, the 5060 is the more affordable card. But availability has been tight, and street prices often exceed MSRP.
Used at $350โ450, the 4070 is more expensive but offers significantly more performance and VRAM. Its resale value has stayed high because it’s still a strong 1440p card.
For pure value, the 5060 wins at MSRP. But at current street prices, the two are close, and the 4070’s extra performance and VRAM may justify the premium for 1440p gamers.
The verdict
The RTX 4070 is the faster card in raw performance โ 25โ35% ahead in raster, with more VRAM and memory bandwidth. For 1440p gaming at high settings, it’s the better card.
The RTX 5060 is the better new card โ DLSS 4, lower power draw, and a lower MSRP. For 1080p gamers, it’s a solid choice.
The decision comes down to resolution and budget. For 1440p, the 4070. For 1080p on a budget, the 5060.
Short version:
Choose the RTX 5060 if you’re building a 1080p system, want DLSS 4, low power draw, and a warranty at MSRP.
Choose the RTX 4070 if you game at 1440p, want more VRAM and raw performance, and can find it used at a fair price.
