GPU Battle #38 โ€” RX 9070 vs RTX 4070 Super

The RX 9070 is AMD’s 2025 RDNA 4 mid-range card โ€” 16 GB GDDR6, FSR 4, and a $549 MSRP. The RTX 4070 Super is NVIDIA’s 2024 Ada refresh โ€” 12 GB GDDR6X, DLSS 3, and once the best value in the upper-mid-range at $599. Both target 1440p high-refresh gaming. The comparison is about raw performance versus features, and VRAM versus upscaling quality. It’s genuinely close.

Short version: The RX 9070 is faster in raster and has more VRAM. The RTX 4070 Super has DLSS 3 and stronger RT. For raster gaming, the 9070 wins. For ray tracing and upscaling, the 4070 Super is competitive.

Specs

The RX 9070 is RDNA 4 on TSMC 4nm โ€” 3,584 stream processors, 16 GB GDDR6 on a 256-bit bus, ~220W TBP, PCIe 5.0. It supports FSR 4, AMD’s AI-based upscaling, and improved RT hardware.

The RTX 4070 Super is Ada Lovelace on TSMC 4N โ€” 7,168 CUDA cores, 12 GB GDDR6X on a 192-bit bus, 220W TGP, PCIe 4.0. It supports DLSS 3 with single-frame generation, and its RT hardware is third-gen.

The 4070 Super has more CUDA cores, but the 9070 has a wider memory bus and more VRAM. Both draw the same power. The architectural approaches are different โ€” NVIDIA relies on core count and DLSS, AMD on memory bandwidth and FSR.

Rasterization

In raster, the RX 9070 is roughly 10โ€“20% faster than the RTX 4070 Super at 1440p and 4K. Its wider memory bus and RDNA 4’s architectural improvements give it a consistent edge.

The 4070 Super is still a strong 1440p card and handles entry 4K with settings tweaks. But the 9070’s extra bandwidth and VRAM help in the newest titles.

For pure raster, the 9070 wins.

Ray tracing

Ray tracing is closer. RDNA 4’s RT hardware is a big improvement over RDNA 3, and the 9070 lands close to the 4070 Super in RT workloads. In some titles, the 9070 leads; in others, the 4070 Super is slightly ahead.

The 4070 Super’s third-gen RT cores and NVIDIA’s mature driver stack give it a small edge in the most demanding RT games. But the gap is much smaller than in previous AMD vs NVIDIA comparisons.

For ray tracing, the two are roughly tied, with a slight edge to NVIDIA in path-traced titles.

VRAM and memory

The 9070 has 16 GB; the 4070 Super has 12 GB. At 1440p with high textures, both are fine. At 4K or in the newest titles, the 9070’s extra VRAM provides headroom the 4070 Super lacks.

The 9070 also has a wider memory bus โ€” 256-bit versus 192-bit โ€” which gives it more bandwidth: ~640 GB/s versus ~504 GB/s. That matters at higher resolutions.

For long-term use and 4K, the 9070’s VRAM advantage is real.

Power and thermals

Both cards draw ~220W. Efficiency is comparable. Neither is a low-power card, but both are reasonable for their performance class.

For SFF builds or quiet systems, both need decent airflow but neither is extreme.

Features

The 9070 supports FSR 4, DisplayPort 2.1a, AV1 encoding, and modern APIs. FSR 4 is a major improvement over FSR 3 and closes much of the gap with DLSS.

The 4070 Super supports DLSS 3, which remains excellent โ€” NVIDIA’s upscaling is still the gold standard. Its NVENC encoder is useful for streaming, and its driver stack is mature. But it lacks DisplayPort 2.1.

For upscaling quality, DLSS 3 is still slightly ahead in some titles, but FSR 4 has narrowed the gap considerably. Both are good in practice.

Price and value

New at $549, the 9070 is a solid value โ€” faster in raster, more VRAM, and modern features.

Used at $450โ€“550, the 4070 Super is similarly priced. It’s a strong card with DLSS 3, but the 9070’s raster and VRAM advantages make it the better new buy.

At MSRP, the 9070 is the better card. At current used prices, the 4070 Super is competitive but not clearly better.

The verdict

The RX 9070 is the better card for raster gaming. It’s faster, has more VRAM, and supports FSR 4. For 1440p and 4K raster, it’s the better pick.

The RTX 4070 Super is competitive in ray tracing and has DLSS 3, which remains the best upscaling solution. For RT-heavy gaming, it’s a strong alternative.

The decision comes down to workload. For raster and VRAM, the 9070. For RT and DLSS, the 4070 Super is close.

Short version:
Choose the RX 9070 if you want faster raster performance, more VRAM, and FSR 4 at a fair price.
Choose the RTX 4070 Super if you value DLSS 3, strong ray tracing, and NVIDIA’s mature driver stack.
