๐Ÿ’ช GPU Battle #27 RX 9060 XT vs RTX 3070 Ti ๐Ÿ’ช

The RX 9060 XT is AMD’s 2025 RDNA 4 mid-range card, aimed at 1080p and entry 1440p gaming. The RTX 3070 Ti is NVIDIA’s 2021 Ampere upper-mid-range card, fast but limited by 8 GB of VRAM. One is new with a warranty and modern features; the other is used and cheap but showing its age in the newest titles. The choice comes down to whether you want modern efficiency and VRAM headroom, or maximum raw performance per dollar.

Short version: The RX 9060 XT is the better new card โ€” more VRAM, far better ray tracing, modern upscaling, and lower power draw. The RTX 3070 Ti is only worth it if you find it very cheap and don’t care about new features.

Specs

The RX 9060 XT is RDNA 4 on TSMC 4nm โ€” 2,048 stream processors, 8 GB or 16 GB GDDR6 on a 128-bit bus, ~160W TBP, PCIe 5.0. It supports FSR 4, AMD’s AI-based upscaling, and improved RT hardware.

The RTX 3070 Ti is Ampere on Samsung 8nm โ€” 6,144 CUDA cores, 8 GB GDDR6X on a 256-bit bus, 290W TGP, PCIe 4.0. It supports DLSS 2 and 3 (without frame gen), and its RT hardware is decent for its generation.

The 3070 Ti launched at $599 and now sells used for $250โ€“320. The 9060 XT launched at $299 (8 GB) and $349 (16 GB), and sits around those prices new.

Rasterization

In raster, the RTX 3070 Ti is slightly faster than the RX 9060 XT โ€” roughly 5โ€“10% at 1080p and 1440p. The 3070 Ti has more raw compute and a wider memory bus, and in games that don’t exceed 8 GB of VRAM, it holds a small lead.

The 9060 XT is close, though, and in the newest titles the picture changes. Games that push past 8 GB of textures at 1440p run better on the 16 GB version of the 9060 XT, while the 3070 Ti stutters or drops settings. The 8 GB 9060 XT matches the 3070 Ti’s limitations.

At 1080p, both cards are comfortable. At 1440p, the 16 GB 9060 XT is the safer long-term pick.

Ray tracing

Ray tracing favors the 9060 XT clearly. RDNA 4’s RT hardware is a big step up from RDNA 3, and the 9060 XT lands close to the RTX 4060 Ti in RT workloads. The 3070 Ti’s RT is decent for its generation but now two generations behind.

In modern RT titles, the 9060 XT leads by 15โ€“30%. In path-traced games, the gap is larger still. If ray tracing matters to you, the 9060 XT is the better choice.

VRAM and longevity

This is the biggest factor. The 3070 Ti has 8 GB, and that’s already a problem in several 2024โ€“2025 titles at 1440p with high textures. The 16 GB 9060 XT has double the VRAM and will handle new games more comfortably for years.

The 8 GB 9060 XT matches the 3070 Ti’s limitation and should be avoided for anything above 1080p. The 16 GB version is the one worth buying.

For a card you plan to keep four or five years, 16 GB is the safer bet. The 3070 Ti’s 8 GB is its biggest weakness.

Power and thermals

The 9060 XT is far more efficient. At ~160W, it draws roughly 130W less than the 3070 Ti’s 290W under load. It runs cooler, needs less cooling, and works in smaller cases with smaller PSUs.

The 3070 Ti runs hot and needs good airflow. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s a real consideration for SFF builds or quiet systems.

Features

The 9060 XT supports FSR 4, DisplayPort 2.1a, AV1 encoding, and modern APIs. FSR 4 is a significant improvement over FSR 3 and closes much of the gap with DLSS.

The 3070 Ti supports DLSS 2 and 3 (without frame gen), which remains excellent. Its NVENC encoder is still useful for streaming, and NVIDIA’s driver stack is mature. But it lacks newer AI features and DisplayPort 2.1.

For upscaling quality, DLSS is still slightly ahead in some titles, but FSR 4 has narrowed the gap considerably. Both are good in practice.

Price and value

New at $349 for the 16 GB model, the 9060 XT is a solid value โ€” more VRAM, better RT, modern features, lower power, and a warranty.

Used at $250โ€“320, the 3070 Ti is cheaper but carries real trade-offs โ€” 8 GB VRAM, high power draw, no warranty. At $250 it’s a decent 1080p card. Above $300, the 9060 XT 16 GB is the better buy.

The verdict

The RX 9060 XT 16 GB is the better card overall. It’s slightly behind in pure raster but far ahead in ray tracing, VRAM, efficiency, and modern features. For a new build in 2025, it’s the obvious pick over a used 3070 Ti.

The RTX 3070 Ti is only worth considering at a steep discount. If you find it under $250 and only game at 1080p, it can make sense. Otherwise, the 9060 XT 16 GB is the safer, more future-proof choice.

Short version:
Choose the RX 9060 XT 16 GB if you’re buying new, want more VRAM, better RT, and modern features.
Choose the RTX 3070 Ti if you find it very cheap used and only game at 1080p.
