The 5080 has more than double the core count and four generations of architectural improvement. The 6950 XT has a similar TDP but is far less efficient per frame.
Rasterization
In raster, the RTX 5080 is roughly 70–90% faster than the RX 6950 XT at 4K. Its newer architecture, GDDR7 memory, and much higher IPC give it a huge lead. Even at 1440p, the 5080 leads by 60–80%.
The 6950 XT is still a capable 4K raster card — it was AMD’s flagship — but it’s in a different performance class. For pure raster, the 5080 wins by a wide margin.
Ray tracing
Ray tracing favors the 5080 overwhelmingly. Its fourth-gen RT cores are dramatically faster than RDNA 2’s first-gen, and the gap is often 3x or more in RT-heavy titles. The 6950 XT’s RT is barely usable in modern games.
For ray tracing, the 5080 is in a different universe.
VRAM and memory
Both cards have 16 GB on a 256-bit bus. VRAM is identical, but the 5080’s GDDR7 is much faster — ~960 GB/s versus ~576 GB/s on the 6950 XT. The bandwidth advantage matters at 4K and in memory-heavy workloads.
For pure gaming at 1440p, 16 GB is plenty on both. At 4K, the 5080’s faster memory helps.
Power and thermals
Both cards draw around 335–360W. But the 5080 delivers nearly double the performance for similar power — so it’s effectively far more efficient per frame.
Both need good cooling and a 750W+ PSU. Neither is a low-power card.
Features
The 5080 supports DLSS 4 with multi-frame generation, DisplayPort 2.1b, and newer NVENC encoders. DLSS 4 can generate up to three additional frames per rendered frame, dramatically improving perceived smoothness.
The 6950 XT supports FSR 2 and 3, which are behind DLSS 4 in quality and features. It lacks DisplayPort 2.1 and newer media features.
For features, the 5080 is far ahead.
Price and value
New at $999 (if you can find it at MSRP), the 5080 is the more affordable card at MSRP.
Used at $400–500, the 6950 XT is significantly cheaper and still a strong 4K raster card. For pure raster gaming on a budget, it’s excellent value.
For pure value, the 6950 XT wins. For performance and features, the 5080 wins.
The verdict
The RTX 5080 is the faster card by a wide margin — 70–90% ahead in raster, 3x in RT. For gaming at 1440p or 4K, it’s the better card.
The RX 6950 XT is the budget 4K raster champion. At $400–500 used, it delivers flagship-class raster performance at a fraction of the price. Its RT and upscaling are weak, but for pure raster gaming, it’s a bargain.
The decision comes down to budget. If you can afford $999, the 5080. If you’re limited to $400–500, the 6950 XT is a great value.
