๐Ÿ’ช CPU Battle #37 Apple M3 Max 16 Core vs Core Ultra 9 185H ๐Ÿ’ช

CPU Battle #37 โ€” Apple M3 Max 16-Core vs Core Ultra 9 185H

These two chips sit in very different laptops but often get compared because both are flagship mobile silicon from 2023โ€“2024. The Apple M3 Max is Apple’s top-tier chip for the MacBook Pro 16″ โ€” 16 cores, a massive GPU, and unified memory. The Core Ultra 9 185H is Intel’s Meteor Lake flagship for premium Windows laptops โ€” 16 cores, Arc graphics, and a dedicated NPU. One is a desktop-class SoC in a laptop; the other is a mainstream high-end mobile chip. The comparison isn’t close on raw performance, but they target different buyers.

Short version: The M3 Max is faster, more efficient, and better in every measurable way. But it runs macOS. The 185H is Intel’s best mobile chip for Windows laptops and is a capable all-rounder, just not in the same class.

Specs

The M3 Max 16-core is built on TSMC N3B (3nm). It has 12 performance cores and 4 efficiency cores, with 48 MB of L2 cache (shared). Memory is unified, up to 128 GB, with bandwidth around 400 GB/s. The GPU has up to 40 cores. A 16-core Neural Engine. TDP is roughly 30โ€“55W depending on workload, and it’s used in the MacBook Pro 14″ and 16″.

The Core Ultra 9 185H is Meteor Lake on Intel 4 (7nm). It has 16 cores โ€” 6 P-cores with hyper-threading, 8 E-cores, and 2 LP E-cores โ€” for 22 threads total. Boost is 5.1 GHz. 24 MB L3 cache. Arc integrated GPU with 8 Xe cores. NPU rated at 11 TOPS. TDP is 45W base with 115W max turbo.

The architectural difference is enormous. Apple’s chip uses a wide, high-bandwidth design with unified memory. Intel’s uses a tile-based design with a mix of core types and standard memory. Apple’s memory bandwidth alone โ€” over three times Intel’s โ€” explains much of the performance gap.

CPU performance

The M3 Max wins decisively. In Geekbench 6, it scores roughly 3,200 single-core and 21,000 multi-core. The 185H scores around 2,400 single-core and 13,000 multi-core. That’s a 30% single-threaded lead and a 60% multi-threaded lead.

The gap is largest in sustained workloads. The M3 Max has more performance cores, wider execution, and vastly more memory bandwidth. It compiles code, renders video, and processes data faster than the Intel chip.

The 185H is still a capable CPU โ€” it’s Intel’s best mobile chip โ€” but it’s in a different tier. For everyday tasks, both feel fast. For heavy work, the M3 Max is in another league.

GPU performance

The M3 Max’s GPU (30 or 40 cores) is dramatically faster than Intel’s Arc integrated GPU. In gaming and GPU compute, the M3 Max leads by 2โ€“4x depending on the workload. Apple’s GPU also benefits from unified memory, which lets it access large data without copying.

The 185H’s Arc GPU is Intel’s best integrated graphics โ€” a real improvement over previous generations. It handles light gaming, video playback, and GPU-accelerated creative work. But it’s not in the same class as the M3 Max’s GPU.

For GPU-heavy work โ€” 3D rendering, video editing, local AI โ€” the M3 Max wins by a wide margin.

NPU and AI

The M3 Max’s Neural Engine is more capable in practice, though Apple doesn’t publish TOPS. The 185H’s NPU is rated at 11 TOPS, which meets the older Intel AI PC spec but falls short of the 40+ TOPS required for Copilot+ features.

For local AI workloads โ€” LLMs, image generation, ML inference โ€” the M3 Max is significantly faster. Its unified memory allows it to run larger models than the 185H can. macOS’s Core ML framework is also more mature than Intel’s OpenVINO/DirectML stack.

The M3 Max is the better AI chip.

Efficiency and battery life

Apple’s efficiency is class-leading. The M3 Max, despite being a power-hungry chip for a laptop, delivers performance-per-watt that Intel can’t match. MacBook Pro 16″ with M3 Max gets 15โ€“22 hours of typical battery life.

The 185H is efficient by x86 standards but 30โ€“50% behind Apple in performance-per-watt. Premium Windows laptops with the 185H typically get 8โ€“12 hours of battery life โ€” good, but not class-leading.

Both enable all-day battery life for light use. For sustained heavy workloads on battery, the M3 Max is dramatically better.

Software ecosystem

macOS with M3 Max:

  • Native ARM support across the OS and most professional apps
  • Rosetta 2 for x86 apps โ€” excellent performance
  • Mature creative and developer tools
  • Consistent experience across Apple Silicon

Windows with Core Ultra 9 185H:

  • Broad x86 software compatibility
  • Runs any Windows application natively
  • Gaming support is universal (unlike Windows on ARM)
  • Full driver support from all vendors

The trade-off is real. macOS has a smaller software library but a more polished experience for what’s available. Windows runs everything but lacks Apple’s integration.

For most professional software, both platforms work. For gaming, Windows is the only option. For creative and development work, macOS often has the edge.

Platform and availability

The M3 Max is available in MacBook Pro 14″ and 16″. Apple controls the entire stack โ€” SoC, OS, hardware, drivers.

The 185H is available in premium Windows laptops from Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS, Samsung, and others. Each OEM tunes power, cooling, and drivers differently.

Apple’s single-vendor model gives consistent performance. Intel’s multi-vendor model gives more choice.

Price and value

MacBook Pro 16″ with M3 Max starts around $3,500. It’s a premium product with premium pricing.

Windows laptops with the Core Ultra 9 185H start around $1,500โ€“2,000. They’re significantly cheaper for comparable configurations, though the performance is lower.

The M3 Max is more expensive but much faster. The 185H is more affordable and offers full Windows compatibility. The value depends on what you need.

The verdict

The M3 Max is the better chip in every measurable way. It’s faster, more efficient, and better at GPU and AI workloads. But it’s locked to macOS and comes at a significant price premium.

The 185H is Intel’s best mobile chip and a strong performer in Windows laptops. It’s not competitive with the M3 Max on raw performance, but it runs Windows natively and offers full software compatibility at a lower price.

This isn’t really M3 Max versus 185H โ€” it’s macOS versus Windows. Pick the platform you need, then the best chip within it.

Short version:
Choose the Apple M3 Max 16-core if you want the fastest laptop chip, best efficiency, and can live in macOS.
Choose the Core Ultra 9 185H if you need Windows, want full software compatibility, and prefer a lower price point.
