๐ช CPU Battle #29 Ryzen 7 8700G vs Core i5 14500 ๐ช
The Ryzen 7 8700G is AMD’s 2024 Zen 4 APU โ eight cores with the fastest integrated graphics ever shipped on a desktop chip. The Core i5-14500 is Intel’s 2024 Raptor Lake Refresh mid-ranger โ six P-cores, eight E-cores, 14 cores and 20 threads. One is built for systems without a graphics card; the other is a conventional all-rounder. The right pick depends almost entirely on whether you’re buying a discrete GPU.
Short version: The 14500 wins on raw CPU performance and value for anyone with a graphics card. The 8700G only makes sense in a GPU-less compact build.
Specs
The 8700G is Zen 4 on TSMC 4nm โ eight cores, sixteen threads, 4.2 GHz base, 5.1 GHz boost, 16 MB L3, 65W TDP. Its Radeon 780M has 12 RDNA 3 compute units โ by far the fastest iGPU on a desktop chip. AM5, DDR5 only, PCIe 4.0.
The 14500 is Raptor Lake Refresh on Intel 7 โ six P-cores with HT plus eight E-cores, 14 cores and 20 threads, 2.6 GHz base, 5.0 GHz boost, 24 MB L3, 65W base with 154W turbo. UHD 770 graphics, weak. LGA1700, DDR4 or DDR5, PCIe 5.0.
The 8700G launched at $329. The 14500 sits around $230โ260 โ cheaper, with more threads.
Gaming
With a discrete GPU, the 14500 leads by roughly 5โ10% at 1080p. Higher P-core clocks and a bigger cache give it an edge, and the 8700G’s small L3 hurts it slightly in CPU-bound scenes. At 1440p and 4K both are GPU-bound, so the gap disappears.
Without a discrete GPU the comparison flips. The 8700G’s Radeon 780M plays most modern games at 1080p low-to-medium at 30โ60 FPS. The 14500’s UHD 770 cannot โ fine for desktop work and video, not for gaming.
Frame times are comparable. The 14500 has slightly better 1% lows in CPU-heavy titles; the 8700G is smoother in iGPU gaming.
Productivity
Multi-threaded work favors the 14500 clearly. With 20 threads against 16 and higher IPC, it’s roughly 15โ25% faster in Cinebench and Blender, and noticeably faster in code compilation and video encoding. The 8700G holds up in single-threaded tasks thanks to its high boost clock, but the 14500 wins across mixed workloads.
Intel’s Quick Sync gives the 14500 a real advantage for video editors, which the 8700G’s RDNA 3 iGPU doesn’t match for encoding quality. For streaming, both handle CPU encoding; the 14500 has more headroom.
Power and thermals
Both are 65W parts, but the 14500’s turbo pushes to 154W and runs warmer under sustained all-core load. It still cools fine with a mid-range air cooler. The 8700G is more efficient โ a mobile-derived APU in a desktop package. It runs cool and quiet and works well in small form factor builds.
Platform
The 8700G uses AM5, which AMD supports through at least 2027. You can drop in a future Zen 5 or Zen 6 chip without changing board or memory. The catch is PCIe 4.0 only โ an APU limitation. If you want a fast PCIe 5.0 GPU or SSD, that matters.
The 14500 uses LGA1700, which supports 12thโ14th gen. Intel has moved to LGA1851, so it’s a dead end for future CPUs. It does support PCIe 5.0 and DDR5. Neither platform has a real CPU upgrade path, but AM5 at least stays alive for the socket.
Price and value
The 14500 at $230โ260 is cheaper and faster for anyone with a discrete GPU. It’s the better value in a normal build. The 8700G at $329 costs more but eliminates the need for a graphics card. In a budget SFF build without a GPU, that saves $150โ200, and total system cost often favors the 8700G.
The verdict
The 14500 is the better chip for a conventional build. Faster in gaming with a GPU, faster in productivity, cheaper. For most users it’s the obvious pick.
The 8700G is a niche product for a specific case โ a GPU-less system that still games. If that’s your build, nothing else comes close. If you’re using a graphics card, the 14500 wins on every metric that matters.
Short version:
Choose the Ryzen 7 8700G if you’re building a compact system with no discrete GPU and want the best integrated graphics available.
Choose the Core i5-14500 if you have a graphics card, want better CPU performance, and prefer the lower price.
