This is a budget-to-mid-range fight between Intel’s Raptor Lake Refresh and AMD’s Zen 4 APU. The i5-14400 is a 10-core chip — 6 performance cores with hyper-threading and 4 efficiency cores, 16 threads total — but it has no meaningful integrated GPU for gaming. The Ryzen 5 8600G is a 6-core, 12-thread Zen 4 chip with AMD’s Radeon 760M integrated graphics — one of the strongest iGPUs on the market. Same price tier, very different priorities.

In CPU performance, the i5-14400 wins comfortably — roughly 20–30% in multi-threaded workloads thanks to its 16 threads and higher core count, and slightly ahead in single-thread as well. The 8600G also includes a basic NPU for light AI workloads. In price, they’re close, but the 8600G delivers far more value if you’re building without a GPU.
