Introduction to HTML

HTML (HyperText Markup Language) helps the web browser to present a document to the viewer/user. HTML uses tags to customize the content. If you want to style the content then you use CSS.

An html document must have 3 tags. html, head and body

  • html is the root element, must be at the beginning and all the other elements should be inside this one. element is a starting tag, content and an ending tag, example <h1>Hello</h1><html>
  • head is the element that can be used to write metadata for your page (metadata = data for other data). It is the first tag inside HTML. You can write the title, description and keywords for the web page. You can also add the css files here. <head>
  • body contains the content that will be visible to your web page. Must be only one body tag. <body>

other useful tags

  • <p> block of text, paragraph <p>
  • <a> a hyperlink to other webpages <a>
  • <img> embeds an image <img>
  • <ul> shows an unordered list. <ul> Child element should be <li> list item
  • <ol> shows an ordered list. <ol> Child element should be <li> list item
  • <header> is a section element, at the top of the screen. <header>
  • <footer> is a section element, at the bottom of the screen. <footer>
  • <section> is a standalone section. <section>
  • <div> is a generic container and has no effect on the content/layout until use CSS
